Applications of Booster Transformer

Voltage Regulation in Power Distribution
Booster transformers mainly regulate voltage in power distribution systems. In areas with long power lines, voltage drop is a big issue. A booster transformer counteracts this. It increases the voltage at strategic points along the line. This ensures consistent power delivery.

Railway Systems
In railway systems, booster transformers play a critical role in eliminating stray currents. Stray currents can damage train electronics and disrupt communications. Booster transformers can minimize these risks for railways. They ensure the system operates safely and efficiently.

Industrial and Commercial Applications
In industrial and commercial settings, large machines need stable voltage. Booster transformers prevent voltage fluctuations. They protect equipment from damage and boost the electrical system’s efficiency.

What Kinds of Boost Transformer Voltage Regulation?

The voltage regulation mode of boost transformer has two kinds: on-load voltage regulation and no-load voltage regulation: On-load voltage regulation means that the transformer can adjust its sub position during operation, so as to change the transformer ratio, so as to achieve the purpose of voltage regulation. In an on-load voltage regulating transformer, there are two ways: wire end voltage regulating and neutral point voltage regulating, that is, the difference between the transformer splitter at the end side of the high voltage winding line or at the neutral side of the high voltage winding. At the neutral point side, the connector can reduce the insulation level of the transformer tap, which has obvious advantages. Still, the neutral point must be directly grounded when the transformer is running.

No-load voltage regulation refers to the transformer in the case of a power outage, maintenance to adjust the position of transformer sub, so as to change the transformer ratio, in order to achieve the purpose of voltage regulation.

The boost transformer splitter is generally tapped from the high voltage side, which mainly considers: Transformer high-voltage winding is generally on the outside, and tap lead connection is convenient; The high voltage side current is smaller, the conductor section of the current carrying part of the lead line and the split switch is smaller, and the influence of poor contact can be easily solved.

Production Process of Booster Transformer

01/

Core Construction
The transformer’s core dimensions are determined. Then there is the process of core stacking, which is followed by the core cutting process. The pre-cut or uncut steel rolls are stacked and cut in accordance with the core design.

02/

Coil Winding
Typically, the coil winding room is a separate space away from the rest of the manufacturing floor. Working the horizontal or vertical winding mandrels requires positive pressure. Either continuously transposed conductor or copper magnetic wire is utilized as the conductor.

03/

Insulation
The insulating area is also separate from the manufacturing areas for transformers. High density pressboard is used to create the spacers and insulation cylinders for the winding. The winding height is checked and adjusted first using coil sizing force.

04/

Coil Assembly
The components of the insulation, conductor, and winding types are considered while assembling a coil. With the use of low viscosity, high strength epoxy resin, the exposed edges of the core are joined together. This glue penetrates and binds the laminations. To secure insulation, prefabricated oil is applied to the bottom clamps.

05/

Processing
Following the completion of lead connections, the assembly moves on to the next stage that involves the vapour phase unit. Using a vapour phase cycle approach, the entire core and coil assembly is then dried.

06/

Final Assembly And Testing
The final assembly is then made complete, including the installation of the conservatory, radiators, pumps, and fans. After that, the unit is sent for testing. Any transformer manufacturer who does not test the transformer thoroughly before sending the same for usage, is only increasing the risk of failure and damage.

How to Maintance Booster Transformer

Routine inspections and scheduled maintenance of booster transformers are essential for early detection of potential issues, allowing utilities to take proactive measures to prevent future problems. Regular checks, particularly for overloading, damaged connectors, worn-out power cords, burning odours, loose plugs or misaligned parts, are critical O&M practices aimed at reducing system failures and fire risks.

Booster transformer maintenance involves critical practices to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Regular monitoring of oil levels and prompt leakage rectification is essential. It is crucial to ensure periodic checks for oil breakdown voltage (BDV) and acidity, with observations kept under scrutiny if acidity levels are in the range 0.5-1mg KOH. The breather, equipped with silica gel and an oil seal, requires routine examination for proper functioning. Silica gel dehydration should be conducted as needed. Periodic inspections for loose connections at high voltage (HV) and low voltage (LV) terminations, ensuring integrity and cleanliness, are necessary.

FAQ

Q: Where is the best location for booster transformer?

A: Place the BB at the source end of the run, rather than at the load end. The reason is that you want the long run to be at the highest voltage, and thus lowest current, possible.

Q: What is the rating of a booster transformer?

A: Frequencies in electric railways are 50 Hz, and the power ratings of booster transformers are 100-800 kVA.

Q: What are the practical applications of booster transformer?

A: Industrial and Commercial Use: Boosting transformers are utilized in various industrial and commercial applications, including manufacturing facilities, data centers, and large-scale installations.

Q: What is the difference between auto transformer and booster transformer?

A: Autotransformers are used to compensate for voltage drops in transmission and distribution lines. When used for this purpose, they are known as booster transformers. Autotransformers are used for reducing the voltage supplied to a.c.motors during the starting period.

Q: Why do we need a booster transformer?

A: Booster transformer is one which is often used towards the end of a power line to raise the voltage to the desired value. It is used for controlling the voltage of a feeder at a point far away from the main transformer.
