Rated Limit Short-Circuit Breaking Capacity (Icu) & Rated Operating Short-Circuit Breaking Capacity (Ics)
Circuit breakers play a critical role in protecting electrical systems by interrupting the flow of current during overloads and short circuits. Two key parameters that define their performance are the rated limit short-circuit breaking capacity (Icu) and the rated operating short-circuit breaking capacity (Ics).
Icu represents the maximum current that a circuit breaker can interrupt once under standard conditions. It's a measure of the breaker's ability to handle a severe short circuit without suffering damage. On the other hand, Ics indicates the circuit breaker's capability to interrupt a short circuit multiple times without needing repair. It's often specified as a percentage of Icu, with typical values ranging from 50% to 75%.
Current Limiting Effect
The current limiting effect of a circuit breaker is its ability to reduce the peak fault current by quickly opening its contacts to create an arc. The faster the circuit breaker operates, the more it limits the fault current, reducing the impact of electromagnetic, electrodynamic, and thermal effects on the breaker and connected electrical equipment. This not only enhances the safety of the system but also extends the service life of the circuit breaker.
Overload and Short Circuit Protection
Short circuit protection involves immediate tripping of the circuit breaker upon detection of a short circuit to prevent damage to the electrical system. Adjusting the protection setting values according to changes in load conditions is crucial to avoid frequent tripping that can affect power quality or failing to provide adequate protection to the line and equipment.
Overload delay protection is designed to prevent equipment damage by cutting off the power supply when the load current exceeds the safe limits for an extended period. This protection mechanism allows for a certain delay to accommodate temporary overloads without triggering the circuit breaker.
Isolation and Leakage Protection
The isolation function ensures that the circuit breaker, when turned off, does not allow leakage currents that could harm personnel or equipment. Leakage protection devices, available in thermal-magnetic and electronic types, are used to detect and interrupt power supply when leakage currents reach a predetermined threshold. Electronic leakage protectors, with their high precision and sensitivity, are widely used despite their susceptibility to interference.
